Endometriosis is the leading cause of dysmenorrheal and infertility for women during their reproductive years, with a serious impact on their health, life quality and work efficiency. In addition, because surgery is the first choice for its treatment, which is costly with a high risk of recurrence after operation, the disease casts a heavy burden on both society and patients, and becomes a serious problem of public health.
Since 1884 when the term endometriosis was coined by John A. Sampson, scholars have attempted to explain its pathogenesis from various aspects and with different theories. Still, it remains a major difficulty for clinicians. Over a long period of time, progress in basic and clinical research into this disease has been slow. And its pathogenesis remains unclear. Furthermore, there is a lack of effective drugs to cure it. With people¡¯s higher requirement for the quality of life, endometriosis, which affects women's physical and metal health and work performance, becomes a major problem demanding prompt solution.
Sponsored by the Xiangshan Science Conferences, a symposium convened on May 22 and 23 in Beijing to explore and discuss major issues concerning the basic and clinical studies of endometriosis, so as to lay a solid foundation for the innovation and improvement of its research, diagnosis and treatment in China, to catch up with the advanced level and finally become a world leader in the field.
Under the theme of ¡°major issues concerning the pathogenesis of endometriosis and its clinical intervention,¡± the meeting invited celebrities and young scholars from various disciplines to have an in-depth discussion on: (1) molecular biology mechanism of endometriosis, (2) endometriosis-associated pain and treatment, (3) endometriosis and infertility as well as assisted reproductive technology, (4) endometriosis: pain, reoccurrence and intervention.
